Do You Need to Register Your Snowmobile in Illinois?

Just like car drivers, snowmobile owners need to go through a registration process before hitting the road – or the snow. This Illinois law exists for similar reasons. It helps the state keep track of owners in case of an accident. And if someone’s snowmobile goes missing, having it registered helps authorities track it down.

Requiring snowmobile owners to register these winter-time vehicles helps keep everyone safer.

Where Do I Register My Snowmobile as an Illinois Resident?

Snowmobiles can be registered at any Cash2Go Financial location throughout the greater Chicagoland area. There, we will walk you through the registration process as you apply according to Illinois Department of Natural Resources rules.

Note: Rules or fee amounts may change. Consider verifying if there are any local county or municipal variations, particularly when using your snowmobile out of state.

Illinois Snowmobile Registration: What to Do

Registering a snowmobile is simple. However, it is up to the individual to follow through on registration, making it easy to forget. This leaves owners vulnerable to financial penalties if they use an unregistered snowmobile, even if by mistake.

If you’re new to the game, there are a few things to remember. Your local Cash2Go Financial can help out by letting you know what you need, walking you through the process, and making sure it’s handled correctly.

Once you get current decals to apply to your snowmobile, you’re good to go.

Follow these snowmobile registration steps (call us first to verify requirements and hours of operation):

Step 1: Visit a Cash2Go Financial location with the proper documents.

Bring these items with you:

  • Valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID
  • Proof of snowmobile ownership (title, bill of sale, or previous registration)
  • Old registration card (if you’re renewing)
  • Payment for the registration fee

Step 2: We handle the paperwork and registration for you.

  • Tell the clerk you want to register a snowmobile.
  • They’ll help you fill out the Illinois DNR Snowmobile Registration Application and make sure all the information is correct.

Step 3: Pay and submit.

  • Pay the registration fee (good for 3 years).
  • Cash2Go submits your application to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
  • You’ll get a receipt or temporary registration right away.

Step 4: Your decals are sent directly to you.

Your official decals and registration card will be mailed to you directly by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) after processing.

You receive two identical decals (stickers) from the IDNR: one for each side of your snowmobile. When they arrive, attach them to your snowmobile as the law requires; be sure they’re highly visible. Keep your registration card with you when riding.

Important Questions About Snowmobile Registration:

When do I renew my registration, and can I do so at any time?

The renewal period in Illinois is April 1 to September 30. Make a note so you remember to handle this task during those months. You won’t be able to register outside of this time period.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s website provides other information on renewals and obtaining proper ID.

What if I frequently ride my snowmobile in Wisconsin, Michigan or elsewhere?

Register it in the state where you live, even if you ride it mostly in another state. As long as you don’t plan to ride it extensively, all you have to do is keep your Illinois registration current.

However, be sure to follow out-of-state rules for visiting riders. For instance, you’ll need a temporary trail pass to ride for 30 days or more in Wisconsin – but that doesn’t mean switching your registration unless you move there.
